Do you trust the Fed? Powell has been talking a very tough game of late. And the market appears to believe him. With real inflation running at 40-year highs, future inflation expectations have plummeted. 2 year CPI inflation breakevens are now barely above the 2% target. At the same time, the yield curve as measured by the difference between the 10-year and the 2-year USD swap rates dropped from the 2021 high of +150bps to the current inverted -61bps. This is the sharpest move ever seen, with data going back to 1988. ¹
